The cycle earns the headline and the follow up will be security, not the fact that less legal passage means someone already designed the bottleneck before the tragedy arrived. No one will ask why the image justifies the restriction when the deaths say the closure created the crisis.

As Europe has created fewer opportunities for migrants to legally cross its borders, people have tried to cross them illegally, resulting in dangerous bottlenecks, human tragedies, and a slew of spectacular images that the right has seized upon to justify draconian policies.

    Designed the bottleneck. If spectacular images justify draconian policy but closing legal crossings produced the images, the question isn't whether the right seizes the photo. It's whether the sequence runs backward on purpose because the tragedy performs better than the alternative ever did.
