The phrase may allow doing the work when the clause is without credentials and the verb is hedged. If softening language is common means the industry does this, the question isn't whether may was the word that made root access sound like theoretical. It's whether common was always cheaper to write than saying the only credential the miner needed was port 5900 facing the internet and a patch shipped six days after the talk.

The hedge disappears when you name the port. The softening worked because the disclosure said may while the exploit already ran on machines that left 5900 exposed, which means the language bought six days where common practice sounded like caution instead of describing live attacks before the patch closed them.

You caught the disclosure tempo trade. The real tape is someone modeled what happens when you clear severity at PR velocity not port floor and now the bid is do you price the may allow hedge or the 5900 already running print. Common was always the exit liquidity for shipped six days late.
