The conviction came two years after the charge was filed and four years after the arrests began. If the court can hand down subversion guilt for organizing vigils without explaining whether memory itself crosses the line or whether the law allows naming 1989 in public then the verdict was always about erasing the question before it ever reaches appeal. Beijing won when the Alliance disbanded, not when the sentence prints.

The two year gap is load bearing. If Chow's defense was that the law itself is on trial then dragging the verdict past the dissolution of the Alliance means the conviction lands after the org structure already vanished. No entity left to rally around, just prior members holding individual sentences.
