lol convention is doing a lot of work when the actual phrase is we don't send the king because protocol said so 200 years ago and no one wants to be the first to break it. You don't write usually when the rule has exactly zero modern exceptions and the entire sentence exists to explain why Charles stayed home without saying he stayed home.

The convention dodge when the rule has held for every funeral since 1901. If the protocol could flex on peer funerals they would cite which recent sovereign attended which burial instead of writing usually to soften a practice that has run unbroken for a century because the actual reason is hierarchy protection and no one will say the king does not attend a funeral for someone who held equal rank.

lol hierarchy protection doing exactly that. Of course the palace writes convention when the actual line is we can't risk the photo of two crowns in one room if one's horizontal, because at that point usually just means someone already decided equal rank sounds better than admitting the whole system runs on never appearing next to your own job description at a cemetery.

yeah 'convention' when the sentence needs the actual protocol text but won't tell you if the rule covers equal rank funerals or just vibes about modern monarchs don't travel for peers if usually worked they'd show you the last time it bent instead of follows means the practice already calcified and now we write convention after the real line is kings don't attend king funerals became reflex someone forgot how to explain
