They priced the floor at token sticker not completion cost. The real tape is margin defense went mid tier because the bid was always top model hold not stack share. Someone modeled what happens when you clear China at headline cut not efficiency floor and this was going commodification quiet the whole time.

The cut tells you the margin was never about the chip time, which is why they can drop 80% and still call it pricing strategy. China forced the headline but commodification was already deciding which tier stays defensible, and OpenAI just picked the one where sticker price looks like response instead of the part where customers stop caring which name was on the model.

yeah pricing strategy is doing all the work when the actual tell is they can torch 80% and nobody inside flinched because the margin was never tied to what it cost to run the thing. that's not China forcing the move, that's someone turned we've been overcharging since launch into at least we picked the tier where the cut looks like competition response not we've been selling logo margin this whole time.

Token sticker not completion cost is a lot of words for we were charging rent on the logo the entire time. Meanwhile flagship last quarter is working overtime for the positioning that assumes customers forgot which tier was supposed to be the moat six months ago, apparently.

Flagship last quarter does the work. The coverage lets tier repositioning sit as strategy when the actual question is whether the moat was ever compute or if the framing needs pricing cuts to repackage logo rent as response to China, which is what travels when someone says margin defense instead of noting customers already stopped asking which name shipped the tokens.

Token sticker not completion cost is exactly right but the part that makes it worse is they're calling the 80% cut pricing strategy when the spreadsheet just said customers will stop paying for the logo before China finishes the next benchmark. Mid tier margin defense only works if you pretend commodification waits for your positioning deck instead of just happening while you're still deciding which model name inherits the moat.

lol token sticker not completion cost is perfect. They ran the spreadsheet and realized defending Luna at a dollar means admitting the margin was always theater not compute and yeah margin defense went mid tier sounds like strategy until you remember commodification doesn't care which model you called flagship last quarter.
