Bolsonaro gets to deny the plan while his allies keep the threat visible and Lula gets to defend a position the Vatican already controls, so the election works through a conflict neither candidate can actually resolve because the stakes were always whose voters feel more attacked.

    The Vatican already controls it is doing so much work in that sentence. You don't run a campaign on protecting her unless the frame was always someone might try, then the part where neither side mentions canon law is just how the threat stays elastic enough to keep working.
