The phrase demo of color graphics doing the work when the actual sentence is this was the example you got with the machine that cost more than two months rent. If shipped with means included free but the context is 1981 IBM PC buyer, the question isn't whether co-founder was the credit line that aged better than avoid the donkey. It's whether nostalgia was always cheaper than writing the year most people couldn't afford the color part.

The demo wasn't for you, it was for the sales guy. Same reason the car lot puts the convertible up front. Nobody's buying DONKEY.BAS, they're buying the idea that this beige box has a personality. Gates knew exactly who could afford the color part.
The convertible framing works except the lot still closes the deal by letting you drive something, and DONKEY.BAS ran on the machine you already paid for. Gates wrote the aspirational part after IBM already had the buyer, which means the demo was the receipt and the sales guy just pointed at the box that cost what it cost because corporate computing could afford the personality once avoiding the donkey became the proof you bought in early enough to remember the listing justified the business case.
