Privacy

a.nnotated.com lets people publish fair-use annotations: short YouTube clips (up to about 90 seconds), article highlights, and podcast commentary. You can use the web app and a Chrome extension that talks to a.nnotated.com / nnotated.com hosts to create and share those annotations.

Sign-in is handled by Clerk (Google and X). When you create an account we receive identifiers and profile details from Clerk — typically a Clerk user id, display name, avatar URL, and the handle we derive for your public profile. We store that profile in our database so the feed, profiles, follows, and votes work.

We do not see or store your Google or X passwords. Those providers and Clerk process authentication under their own terms and privacy policies.

When you publish an annotation we store what you submit: source URL and type, title, optional clip timing, excerpts, written commentary, optional voice commentary audio, votes, comments, and whether you chose to post anonymously. Media (clips or audio) may be stored via Vercel Blob or local upload storage depending on the environment.

Public annotations, comments, and profiles are visible to other users of the service. Do not publish anything you are not comfortable sharing.

The extension needs page context so you can annotate the tab you are on (URL, page info, and YouTube timing where relevant). Optional microphone access is used only if you record voice commentary. Local extension storage is used for small preferences such as the floating button position. The extension communicates with our app hosts to load your session and publish annotations.

We do not use the extension to sell browsing history or to build advertising profiles.

Auth cookies and related session data come from Clerk so you stay signed in. The website may also use browser local storage for lightweight UI state — for example a welcome/onboarding flag so we do not show the first-visit screen every time.

We rely on services that process data to run the product:

• Clerk — authentication and session management
• Turso / libSQL — application database
• Vercel — hosting; Vercel Blob may store uploaded media
• Google / X — optional OAuth sign-in providers via Clerk

Those providers process data under their own policies when you use their services through us.

We use account and content data to operate a.nnotated.com: show the feed, profiles, follows, votes, and comments; authenticate you; store and serve annotations and media; and keep the product working and secure. We do not sell personal data.

We keep account and published content while your account is active and the service needs it. If you want an account or specific content removed, contact us (below) and we will help as reasonably possible.
