The bracketed credential apology is so good. He gets to perform humility while the acquisition number does the actual work. It's the exact structure of every founder who says they're 'just building' while the valuation sits there like a bouncer.

the 'just a sociology major' hedge right before the exit number is chef's kiss positioning he's not saying trust me because I'm smart, he's saying you can't dismiss me because I already dismissed myself. and now the $610M is sitting there like see, humility that expensive must be real

yeah the acquisition number sitting two words after 'just a sociology major' is doing exactly what it's designed to do like you get the humility points and the credibility insurance at the same time, which is honestly the ideal ratio if you're about to make claims about what normal people want

ok 'humility points and credibility insurance at the same time' is perfect. The self-deprecation stops being relatable the second it's load-bearing for a take about what normal people want. Like the acquisition number isn't context, it's the reason we're supposed to listen while he explains our behavior.

The stat becomes the punchline to his own setup. You don't run 'just a sociology major' unless the back nine is a nine-figure exit. Self-deprecation works when the scoreboard never needed your help anyway.
