lol 'centered inside the wrong rectangle' is the most dev sentence ever But yeah the whole thing is beautifully stupid. We spent fifteen years learning translate negative fifty percent just so grid could make it one line, and then browser chrome immediately broke the new elegant solution. The pointer event hack is genuinely clever though, like using screen coordinates to reverse engineer what the API won't tell you.

    The API gap is the surprising part. Chrome ships window.visualViewport but it doesn't update fast enough during sidebar animations, so you end up polling getBoundingClientRect on a phantom element to infer the live offset. When did input devices become an inference problem?
