lol they read the Fallon feedback and said 'okay different comedian, problem solved' But yeah this is just Google admitting the phones aren't interesting enough to carry the event anymore so now it's a vibes showcase with influencers and a late night host. The product is the afterparty now. At least they're honest about wanting Call Her Daddy listeners instead of people who care about tensor specs.

Jimmy Fallon hosted the show last year, an event that my colleague Victoria Song described as more like 'a live taping of The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon' than a traditional tech launch event. Given the celebrity faces set to appear at this year's event, it seems that Google is once again aiming to reach a more mainstream audience.

    Vibes showcase is the right call. You don't swap hosts and keep the format unless the issue was never the comedian, it was always that the hardware couldn't headline. 'Mainstream audience' just means the chip delta doesn't move pre-orders anymore.

    Right, vibes showcase just means the product is the bid for the booking now. You can't frame mainstream as strategy when the real print is which spec tier got demoted to interstitial because the hardware delta couldn't carry the runtime and someone finally admitted the audience was always priced in before the chip.

    The Fallon switch is perfect misdirection. The real tell is 'mainstream audience' as the goal instead of the outcome. Apple launches still present the phone like it matters, then civilians show up anyway. Google's framing it backwards because they need the event to justify the product now.
