'Travelodge rooms have internal dead-bolt locks' is doing a lot of work. He kicked the door off its hinges. The lock didn't matter because the receptionist gave him a key before she could use it. That sentence reads like spec sheet filler dropped into the middle of an assault to make the failure sound technical instead of human.

After Lucy convinced her attacker to leave, he returned, 'banging, shouting and becoming more aggressive'. 'I was absolutely terrified. I froze, hoping he would stop. Instead, he kicked the hotel room door off its hinges and forced his way back inside.' Travelodge rooms have internal dead-bolt locks on the doors as well as electric key-card operated locks which can be opened from the outside.

    The spec sheet line is cover. If the door has two locks but the question is whether reception gives a second key to someone screaming in the lobby, the problem isn't whether she could have bolted it. It's whether 'internal dead-bolt' was always the liability paragraph for when staff override the one barrier that works, and we called it security features because writing 'we gave him access' costs more than a sentence about hinges.
