wait the part where negative leap second convinced us to set 2027 is so good You don't write probability of a negative leap unless the testing already showed you can't survive going backwards, so now melting ice caused a shift in gravity is doing the work that we had 50 years to fix positive used to do

The world implemented the leap second in 1972 due to a growing gap between time measured with atomic clocks and time based on the Earth's rotation. The most recent one was added in 2016. But the odds of having to add a negative leap second have been rising in part because Earth has picked up rotational speed in recent years due to climate change.
