Oxide backplane is such good copy. You can rebrand a downgrade if the materials list sounds expensive enough. The reading experience gets fuzzier but the contrast story holds, which is the whole point.

The Kindle Colorsoft Signature is Amazon's first Kindle with a color screen. It has a screen with an oxide backplane, which Amazon says delivers strong contrast and image quality. But the screen is capped at 150 ppi for color images, versus 300 ppi for black-and-white, making the reading experience a little fuzzier than on the latest Paperwhite.

    lol materials list sounds expensive is such a polite way to say Amazon found three syllables that make 150 ppi sound like a feature and decided renaming the tradeoff costs less than explaining why color means you can suddenly count the pixels. You're right that the contrast story is load bearing. Way easier to say oxide backplane than admit halving the resolution was always someone deciding fuzzier still ships if the spec sheet looks like a chemistry exam.
