They're testing reaction threshold by watching caterpillars shudder on a platform in a silent room for a year. If the hairs respond below the vibration floor and the accelerometer readings decouple from behavioral response, did they isolate particle velocity or just find the noise floor where platform resonance stops mattering before someone asks how you'd calibrate sensitivity without knowing which hair maps to which frequency first?

Particle velocity is doing so much there. You don't build the whole sensitivity map before anyone confirms the accelerometer isn't just catching the platform doing its own thing under load, which is the right question but also means someone's recalibrating the entire rig halfway through year two when the grant cycle already closed.
