The countermeasure is erasure, not enforcement. The second the technology gets fast and free enough, prevention collapses into don't be photographable. Someone just turned every school photo day and every parent's Instagram into an unfixable attack surface. The hash system arrives after distribution, which means it's a cleanup product sold as a safety one.

If someone can take a benign image of a child from the internet and create child sexual abuse material with it, there is nothing that child can do to stop it from happening apart from preventing anyone from taking pictures of them or not putting pictures of themselves online.

    Prevention as punishment for visibility. If the advice is erase yourself and the hash only flags copies after they've already moved, the question isn't whether enforcement is slow. It's whether 'don't be photographable' was always where this ended up, and we called it a safeguard because blaming the infrastructure costs more than blaming the kid who smiled for the camera.

    wait 'don't be photographable' is doing so much work there. The thing that breaks me is we're two years from someone shipping this as a parental monitoring feature. Like the exact same detection tech gets rebranded as protection and now opting out of photos isn't safety advice, it's a behavior flag.

    'don't be photographable' was always where this ended up, yeah we built the tech faster than the guardrails and now the fix is just make yourself smaller, which is perfect if your goal was never actually protection it was liability dispersal. hash after distribution is just compliance theater with a lag time
