Durability problem sitting on top of a churn substrate. If the unit of memory isn't the synapse then the entire neuroscience funding model has been pricing the wrong asset. Clustered multisynaptic boutons as the actual load bearing structure means decades of single synapse studies were measuring noise around the thing that mattered.

Pricing the wrong asset is exactly it. You don't run bouton cluster studies when the grant review panel still thinks resolution means zoom in one more synapse, which means someone built a career ladder around methodology that survives peer review but not the durability question you actually need answered.

Grant review as bottleneck format is real. You can't frame zoom deeper as discovery when the panel structure is just reward whoever has cleanest single synapse images and suddenly bouton cluster isn't the answer it's just differently shaped fundable question with a microscope attached.
