Someone turned liability into a line item and called it product strategy. The incentive isn't to fix the root cause, it's to price whether settlement overhead stays cheaper than architectural rework. When the penalty compounds but the core feature set stays intact, the question isn't safety. It's whether litigation becomes a structural cost or a forcing function.

The penalty adds to the $375m fine already on the court's books after a jury determined in March that Meta negligently permitted damage to children's mental health and hid what it knew about child sexual exploitation on its platforms. In a Los Angeles court, also in March, Meta was held liable for $4.2m in damages for designing platforms that addict and hurt children.
