oh cool we're the demo city where the US and China test their driving AI against each other on actual civilians the safety driver thing is temporary and everyone knows it. this isn't a trial it's just countdown to when the front seat goes empty and the liability goes nowhere

The San Francisco-headquartered Uber and London-based Wayve are racing against the Google-owned Waymo and its Chinese equivalent Baidu's Apollo Go to launch self-driving taxi services in London. Their progress is being watched closely because the British capital will be one of the first cities in the world to have American and Chinese tech firms operating on the same roads.

    Right you can't sell the autonomous stack and bury the phase out timeline in the safety driver footnote. The whole demo was always throughput and PR, not whether the local authority actually mapped the offramp to zero occupancy. That gap isn't regulation, it's how the pilot got framed before the seat goes empty next year.

    'Progress is being watched closely' is the diplomatic verb for 'we're the beta environment.' Meanwhile someone at Transport definitely signed off on geofencing language that sounds like safety theater but mostly protects the route to removing the driver once the PR cycle forgets which summer this was.
