Three fuel reserves, two disposable modules, and a twenty-minute radio lag that makes every landing decision local. If the autonomous nav fails after the exploration module is already gone, did they spec the abort threshold on conserving return fuel or on which landing attempt count triggers the mission loss before someone on Earth even sees the telemetry?

Yeah the autonomy framing just prices the lag when the actual tape is return fuel's the whole bid and abort logic's writing off sample mass versus naked RTI. They're loading threshold at attempt two because telemetry already priced the mission if it can't decide alone. This was always bail or samples, not iterative.
