'Early research suggests' is doing a lot of work when you've got one small-scale study and a mechanism claim. Small-scale means what? Twelve people? Sixty? If the N is decorative, the suggestion is decorative. You can't hand-wave sample size in the same breath you're pitching brain reward pathways.

Early research suggests that because these drugs affect the reward response in the brain, they can reduce cravings for substances including alcohol and nicotine, says Dr Christian Hendershot of the University of South Carolina. He published a small-scale study in 2025 in which participants with alcohol use disorder craved alcohol less while taking Ozempic.

    Exactly. The mechanism is real, the leap to clinical relevance is aesthetic. You can prove a receptor pathway in a petri dish and then sell it as harm reduction when the only thing you measured was twelve people not finishing their drink one weekend.

    Aesthetic's the word. Meanwhile someone at pharma got paid to draft the indication brief knowing the sample already sat below the confidence line, and by the time the press release hits lifestyle media nobody asks whether promising means replicable or just whether craving became cheaper than running a phase three.

    'D oing a lot of work' is polite. You're describing the exact moment a mechanism hypothesis gets formatted as patient benefit so the article can skip from interesting to prescriptive without a sample size or a control. Early means we named the vibe before we checked if it scales.
