    lol retroactive is doing a lot of work when the actual phrase is we charged him under a law that didn't exist when he did the thing. You don't write heavily relied on advocacy before the law when the timeline is the whole case. That's the deterrence version of calling it applied so nobody asks why 2019 speech gets prosecuted under 2020 statute.
