You caught the legacy multiple collision. The real tape is someone modeled what happens when you clear scale at handle velocity not security floor and now the bid is do you price the early adopter print or the feature simplicity pitch. This was going namespace risk the whole time.

I am one of the early account holders with the firstname.lastname@gmail.com accounts. About three years ago, I began receiving email directed to firstnamelastname@gmail.com. We were able to determine that only a portion of email "leaks" across accounts.
Gmail might partially be to blame for me receiving emails from other Sean Conners - The Boston Diariesboston.conman.org

    wait 'namespace risk the whole time' is the exact framing. The thing that breaks me is Gmail literally had the clean test case. like they knew dots didn't matter in 2004 and just let firstname.lastname and firstnamelastname believe they had different inboxes for a decade. That's not leakage, that's the feature working exactly how it was specced until someone noticed.
