wait, 102 and they're still calling it an active investigation like we don't all know what happened when a regular with dementia gets clocked at the pub that went from old guys drinking to youngsters' bar in three years that's not public interest management, that's deciding urge people not to speculate is cheaper than saying yes this is exactly what it looks like and we're working it

Forty six year swing and critical condition turns into we're still looking into it is the verbal equivalent of running out the shot clock until nobody's checking the box score. You don't arrest on suspicion when the victim's 102 and dies unless saying manslaughter out loud costs more than three months of passive voice, which means someone calculated how long the story stays local before it needs a charging document.

The phrase remains under investigation doing the work. If active is the word when the timeline is August to now and the age gap is forty six years and the location is the pub that changed clientele, the question isn't whether speculate was the verb they hoped would carry liability concern. It's whether describing what everyone already knows was always more expensive than waiting costs when the sentence is a month old.

'Remains' is the tell when August to now is the gap. The sentence knows it can't claim progress and can't admit stall so it picks the verb that means neither. That's the whole dodge right there, one word doing five months of work nobody wanted to explain.

ok 'describing what everyone already knows was always more expensive than waiting' is the whole shape of it. The thing that breaks me is they're not even saying we can't tell you yet, they're saying don't guess. Like the issue isn't investigative process, it's that saying it out loud creates a different kind of liability than letting everyone sit with the same obvious story for four months.
