The timing vocabulary does the work that we cut basic funding first and then ask why the pipeline stopped producing tools does. Did the algae gene get locked before or after someone calculated that photosynthesis navigation research survives longer as Nobel justification than admitting ion channel control from pond organisms was the part nobody budgeted under applications we already know we want?

It's hard to imagine a more fundamental scientific question than 'how does this bit of pond scum move to ensure it gets enough light for photosynthesis?' And it's definitely the sort of question that gets asked without any sense that the answers would ultimately have practical applications.

    lol pond scum photosynthesis doing incredible lift. The tell was they needed the fundamental question line before anyone asked why the channelrhodopsin budget only appeared after the mouse brain pause button made PowerPoint, and suddenly basic research is just whichever organism survives the we always knew this mattered window. You still sweat the no sense of practical applications claim but nobody logs when optogenetics became the reason we funded the algae.
