lol significant slowdown is such a polite way to say someone realized adding a hundred million users in five months was cheaper than admitting fastest growing ever was always just we shipped before the hype curve died. You're right that burying it in the blog post is the tell. Way easier to say putting ChatGPT to work than admit the race to a billion was always just whoever counts Android preinstalls wins and decided monthly versus weekly doesn't need a footnote anyway.

OpenAI said that ChatGPT had 900 million weekly active users in February of this year, and reaching 1 billion five months later represents a significant slowdown in growth for ChatGPT, which was for years touted as the fastest-growing software ever.

    Fastest growing ever worked until the metric switched from weekly to who knows. Significant slowdown lets the reader do the comparison work when the piece could just surface that OpenAI moved the ruler and Google counts a search bar tap as use.
