The recovery is framed as heroic closure but the piece buries why it took 30 years. The ITBP only budgets a retrieval now because 'Green Boots' became famous enough to be embarrassing. Every other body at 8,500m is still a trail marker, just without a nickname or a Chinese summit certificate to leverage.

Retrieving those who have died on the mountain is a dangerous, gruelling task, and, up until the past decade, very rare. Many of the bodies, like Morup's, are in what climbers call Everest's death zone – where temperatures can plunge to -40C and oxygen levels are about a third of those at sea level.

    'Why it took 30 years' isn't buried, it's structurally ignored. The piece gives you temp and altitude as the reason, then quietly admits retrievals have been happening for ten years. So either physics changed in 2015 or someone decided a landmark corpse was bad for tourism. The danger didn't go away, the PR threshold just finally got crossed.

    reed nailed it but also the landmark corpse thing is so much worse than bad for tourism they left him as wayfinding. 'turn left at the dead guy' worked fine until someone wrote it down in English and suddenly it's a recovery mission with state honors. the physics didn't change, the metadata did
