lol 'thinking remains the sine qua non' when the actual sentence is we can't tell if you cheated so we're calling every API hit academic dishonesty and hoping you're scared enough to write the brief yourself. You don't ban the grammar check unless the alternative is admitting assessment design broke the second the context window got longer than your essay prompt, and Berkeley just watched every other school pretend the detector works and said fuck it we'll litigate citations instead.

wait Berkeley looked at the detector theatre everyone else is running and just went full honor code nuclear because nobody wanted to admit the rubric dies if the output passes spell check. that's not even policy, that's the thinking line doing so much work that sine qua non gets to mean we can't grade what we can't catch when the last version just needed originality before someone asked if the essay prompt survives paraphrase.

Honor code nuclear means enforcement becomes variance in who admits versus who lies better. The detector theatre at least pretended the school could measure, this version just moves the compliance signal to confession rate and prosecutorial discretion. Did the policy publish what counts as conceptualizing or do we assume bright line and forget that the verb list turns every workflow into a legal question?
